Short answer: for most people, a rechargeable zoom flashlight in the 18650 battery format is the best all-round carry light. Add a wrist light if you want your hands free, and a holster or EDC pouch if you carry it daily. Choose by battery, beam type and how you will carry it, not by the biggest lumen number on the box.
We compared seven products from our Everyday Carry (EDC) range, from a $24.99 wrist light to a $146.15 laser flashlight, by light output, battery, size and use. Prices in the cards update live.

How to choose a tactical flashlight
Lumens: more is not always better
Lumens measure total light output. Many budget lights list a very high number, and real output is often lower and drops as the battery drains. A 5000-lumen light is listed in our range, but for most uses a bright, even beam you can run for a long time matters more. Pair the output with a low mode for reading maps or setting up camp so you do not ruin your night vision.
Battery: 18650, AAA or built-in
- 18650 rechargeable cell: strong, long-lasting power and easy to recharge. Buy cells from a trusted source and use a matching charger.
- AAA batteries: weaker, but available anywhere. The 5000-lumen zoom light accepts three AAAs as a backup.
- Built-in rechargeable: the wrist light and the rechargeable focusing light remove the need to buy cells, but you rely on the charger.
Always check whether the battery is included. The Tactical Laser LED Flashlight is listed without one.
Beam: flood, focus or zoom
A wide beam lights a room or campsite. A tight, focused beam reaches further. A zoom head lets you switch between the two by sliding the head. The focusing light is listed with a range of 200 to 500 meters, which suits spotting and night rides.
Modes and switches
High, medium and low cover most needs. Strobe and SOS modes are for signaling. A tail-cap clicky switch, like the one on the zoom light, is easy to use one-handed.
Size, weight and carry
A pocket light lives in your bag every day. A larger light stays in the truck or the tent. The zoom light weighs about 150 g and runs 145 to 167 mm depending on the zoom position. A holster or EDC pouch keeps a daily light where your hand expects it.
Safety and care
- Never point a laser at eyes, vehicles or aircraft. It can injure eyes and is illegal in many places.
- Treat lithium cells with care. Use the right charger, do not charge unattended, and do not use damaged cells.
- Know your knife laws. The flashlight with a knife is subject to local rules and airline restrictions. Pack it in checked luggage when you fly.
- Learn real first aid. The EDC kit bag can hold a tourniquet and scissors, but a kit is not a substitute for training. Take a stop-the-bleed or first-aid course.
- Waterproofing varies. Do not assume a light is waterproof unless the product page says so. Dry it after wet use.
Pair your light with the right gear
A good light is part of a carry system. See our guides to tactical backpacks and EDC bags, tactical vests, plate carriers and chest rigs, night vision binoculars, goggles and monoculars and concealed carry shirts and holsters.
Tactical flashlight FAQs
How many lumens do I need?
For camping and home use, a few hundred well-controlled lumens is plenty. Higher numbers help for long-range spotting but drain the battery faster.
What is an 18650 battery?
It is a common rechargeable lithium-ion cell used in many flashlights. Use a matching charger and buy cells from a trusted source.
Is the 5000-lumen zoom light really 5000 lumens?
5000 is the number in the listing. Real-world output on budget lights is often lower and drops as the battery drains, so treat it as a maximum.
Can I fly with a flashlight that has a knife?
Check airline and airport rules. Knives generally go in checked luggage, not carry-on.
Is shipping free?
Yes. Free shipping, delivered in 5 to 7 days, plus 20% off applied automatically at checkout.
