Tactical boots buying guide - Fitness Eddy

Tactical Boots: How to Choose for Hiking, Rucking and Training

Short answer: choose the boot for the job. A waterproof high-top suits wet trails and ankle support, a mid-top desert boot suits hot, dry ground and long days on your feet, and an ultralight boot suits running and fast hikes. Then match the size to a foot measurement, not your usual shoe size.

We compared eight pairs from our Tactical Apparel & Footwear range, from $44.44 to about $139, by height, upper material, traction and fit. Prices in the cards update live.

How to choose tactical boots

Height: high-top, mid-top or mid-calf

Taller boots cover more of the ankle and shin and feel more locked in on uneven ground. Lower, mid-top boots are lighter and bend more freely. A boot does not act as a brace, so see a trainer if you have a history of sprains.

Upper material

  • Waterproof fabric: keeps out rain and mud and is usually lighter. Look for breathability on warm days.
  • Cowhide leather: tougher against abrasion, brush and sand. Often heavier and needs a break-in period.
  • Suede: softer and more athletic in feel, with a casual look. It stains and wets more easily than sealed leather.

Outsole and traction

Deep lugs grip mud and loose ground. A low-profile rubber outsole gives a better feel for the ground on dry terrain. If you hike on wet rock or trail, look for the slip-resistant or deep-lug options in the table.

Weight

Heavy boots protect more but tire your legs on long days. If you run or move fast, the ultralight pairs are the better fit.

Steel toe

The Waterproof Tactical Boots have an optional integrated steel toe for heavy-duty foot protection. Steel adds weight and can feel cold in winter. Choose it only if you need it, and do not treat it as rated safety footwear unless the product page says so.

Get the fit right

  • Measure your foot length in centimeters in the evening, when your feet are slightly larger, and compare it to the size chart on the product page.
  • Boots often run snug in the toe box. If you are between sizes, size up and wear the socks you plan to use.
  • Rough US men’s equivalents: EU 40 is about 7, EU 42 about 9, EU 44 about 11 and EU 46 about 12 to 13. Always check the product page chart.
  • Break leather boots in with short walks before a long hike.

Care tips

  • Brush off dirt after use and let boots air dry away from direct heat.
  • Treat leather with a suitable conditioner and suede with a protective spray.
  • Replace insoles when they flatten, and rotate two pairs if you wear boots daily.

Gear to go with your boots
