Best tactical backpack and EDC bag flat-lay: MOLLE backpack, sling bag, waist pack, flashlight, knife and first aid pouch

Tactical Backpacks & EDC Bags: How to Choose the Right Size and Style

Short answer: the best tactical backpack depends on how long you carry it. A sling, chest or waist bag (under 5 liters) covers everyday carry: phone, wallet, keys, a flashlight and a small knife. A 20 to 30 liter tactical backpack handles day hikes, the gym or a range day. A 45 to 60 liter pack is for 2 to 3 day trips or a full get-home bag. Look for 500D to 1000D nylon or Oxford fabric, MOLLE webbing and a padded, adjustable carry system.

We sorted the tactical backpacks, sling bags, chest rigs and waist packs in our range by size and job, from $20.27 to $164.00, with an EDC checklist so you know exactly what to put inside. Prices in the product cards update live.

What makes a good tactical backpack

Fabric strength (D rating)

The D, or denier, number measures fiber thickness. 500D is light and flexible, 600D to 900D is a strong all-round choice, and 1000D is the most abrasion-resistant. Nylon and Oxford fabrics with a water-resistant coating shrug off light rain, but use a rain cover or dry bags in a downpour.

MOLLE webbing

MOLLE is the grid of straps on the outside of many tactical bags. It lets you add pouches for a med kit, a water bottle or a flashlight and move them as your needs change. It is also how a sling or waist bag can attach to a larger pack or to a tactical vest.

Carry system and comfort

For anything over 20 liters, look for padded shoulder straps, a breathable mesh back panel and a sternum strap. A hip belt moves weight off your shoulders on longer hikes. Keep a loaded daypack under about 10 to 15% of your body weight for comfortable all-day carry.

Zippers and access

Heavy-duty zippers (the chest bag below uses YKK) and clamshell openings make it easier to find gear fast. Separate compartments keep your EDC items from sinking to the bottom.

Everyday carry (EDC) checklist

Your EDC bag should solve the small problems of a normal day and help in a minor emergency. Start with these and adjust for your routine:

  • Phone, wallet and keys in a dedicated zip pocket
  • Flashlight, even if your phone has one, so you keep both hands and battery
  • Pocket knife or multitool, where legal
  • Water in a bottle or hydration bladder
  • Small first aid kit with bandages, gauze, pain relievers and any personal medication
  • Power bank and charging cable
  • Snack, tissues, hand sanitizer and a pen
  • Light rain layer or emergency blanket for outdoor days

For a full home and car emergency kit, follow the Ready.gov emergency supply list. Knife length and carry rules vary by state and city, and TSA does not allow knives in carry-on bags, so check before you travel.

Best tactical backpack picks: 25 to 75 liters

Start with the 25 L Tactical Backpack in 500D nylon for day hikes and the gym, available in coyote brown, green and MultiCam. For bigger loads, the 45 L Tactical Multifunctional Backpack uses 600D waterproof fabric, and the 50 L Heavy Duty Backpack in 900D Oxford has two-way zippers and a padded pocket for devices up to 17 inches. Need the most room? The 56 to 75 L Tactical Backpack covers multi-day trips.

Best sling and chest bags for everyday carry

Sling and chest bags keep your essentials in front of you, where you can reach them without taking a pack off. The Tactical Sling Shoulder Bag is 1000D nylon with MOLLE at 11.8 x 7 x 5.1 inches. The Men’s Tactical Chest Bag is waterproof with a curved back plate, and the Lightweight Tactical Chest Bag uses 500D nylon with YKK zippers.

Best waist packs and belt bags

A waist pack is the most hands-free way to carry a phone and keys on runs, rides and walks. The Outdoor Tactical Belt Bag is slim waterproof nylon, the MOLLE Fanny Pack clips onto other gear, and the Tactical First Aid Waist Bag keeps a med kit organized and within reach.

Hydration pack for long days outside

The Hydration Tactical Backpack holds a 2 to 3 liter bladder with a 100 cm drinking tube, so you can drink without stopping on rides and hikes.

EDC essentials to pack inside

Fill your bag with the tools you will actually use: a compact LED tactical flashlight, a folding knife with a 3 mm stainless blade, a tactical belt with a stainless automatic buckle, a 32 oz tactical water bottle and a 14-in-1 survival kit for the car or trail.

How to pack a tactical backpack

  • Put heavy items like water and tools close to your back and between your shoulder blades.
  • Keep daily items in the top or front pockets so you do not unpack to reach them.
  • Store first aid in a dedicated, easy-to-find pouch, ideally marked with a red cross patch.
  • Use MOLLE pouches for things you grab often, like a flashlight or multitool.
  • Tighten compression straps so the load does not shift when you walk or run.

Frequently asked questions

What size tactical backpack do I need?

20 to 30 L for day use. 45 to 60 L for 2 to 3 day trips.

What is the difference between an EDC bag and a tactical backpack?

An EDC bag is small and holds daily essentials. A tactical backpack is bigger and built for hikes, trips and heavier loads.

What should I keep in my EDC bag?

Phone, wallet, keys, flashlight, knife or multitool where legal, water, first aid, a power bank and a snack.

Is 1000D nylon better than 600D?

It is tougher and more abrasion-resistant. 600D is lighter and plenty strong for daily use.

Are tactical backpacks waterproof?

Most are water-resistant. Use a rain cover or dry bags in heavy rain.

Can I take a tactical backpack on a plane?

Yes, if it fits airline size limits. Remove knives and other TSA-prohibited items first.
